As we predicted, the first ever IGJJF Open Championship was a landmark in
Gracie/Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu history. Almost 150 competitors gathered from all
over the world to participate in this event which introduced a revolutionary
new set of rules. As it turned out everything worked out perfectly. Rules
were revised by competitors and coaches, which made easy for them and
everyone in the audience to understand the simple and highly objective new
format. There’s never been a Jiu-Jitsu Tournament with such a high percentage
of submissions, and contrary to some people's expectations, the fact that the
matches had “no time limit” did not make the event boring. Quite the
contrary. The matches were extremely fast paced and exciting to watch.
The participation of the best Jiu-Jitsu Black Belts in the world, was one
of the highlights of the weekend and we were honored to have them amongst us.
Also landing their support were Ed O’neill (from Married with
Children/Dragnet), Grammy Award winner Uli Bella ( Ozomateli ), Rakaa Taylor
( Dilated Peoples ), Kris Kohls, Royce Gracie, Relson Gracie, Jose Fraguas, (
CFW Magazines ) Rigan Machado, Romero Jacare, Pedro Sauer, Promoter Barry
Mayer, Kid Peligro, Gumby, Pedro Valente, “Franjinha”, Fabio Santos, Rodrigo
Antunes, “Mica”, Wander Braga, Juliano Prado, Renato Magno, Marcelo
Melletti, Aloysio e Joao Silva, “Caique” Elias, Cleber Luciano, Mario Aielo,
“Macaco”, Franco de Camargo, Leka Vieira, Jerry Laurita and many others.

The IGJJF would like to thank all competitors for their participation and

We hope that the successfull introduction of this new set of rules will
serve as an example that will be followed by other Gracie/Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
tournaments organizers everywhere. Our goal continues to be making Gracie
Jiu-Jitsu an Olympic sport. In order to accomplish that, we need to work
together. We encourage all organizations to use these new rules. If you
would like our assistance with implementing them in your tournaments, do not
